Last month, a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, a small down just north of Waco, violently exploded, killing 14 people. The blast was so immensely powerful it leveled a four block area, destroying approximately 70 homes.
New information from investigators indicates that the power of the explosion came from the fertilizer company’s stores of ammonium nitrate, a salt-like chemical that is commonly used in fertilizer because plants can easily absorb its nutritious nitrogen ions.
Ammonium nitrate does not explode on its own, however, so the true cause of the blast remains undetermined. Some believe that the fire that was raging at the plant at the time of the accident to be the cause, but there is no official word on it yet.
Investigators are still searching for the explosion’s cause and hope to have answers by the 24th of the month.
